Latah County, Idaho, anchored by the city of Moscow and home to the University of Idaho, operates a unified court system within the Second Judicial District. Cases filed in the county pass through two divisions of the same courthouse: the District Court and its Magistrate Division. Records generated from these proceedings—including motions, judgments, orders, dockets, affidavits, evidence, and opinions—are maintained by the Latah County Clerk of the District Court and form the official documentation of legal activity in the county.

Idaho residents and others seeking court case information have several avenues available to them. Records can be searched through clerk office visits, courthouse kiosks, and online systems. For statewide case information, IdahoStateCourts.us is a useful starting point, and the Idaho Supreme Court’s iCourt Portal enables online searches of civil, criminal, and family law cases by name, case number, or other identifiers across Idaho’s trial courts.

Are Court Records Public in Latah County?

Court records in Latah County are governed by Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32 (ICAR 32), which establishes that records of Idaho’s unified court system are open to public inspection and dissemination as a general rule. ICAR 32 is the controlling framework for what is public, what is restricted, and how records are managed across all Idaho trial courts.

While the presumption favors public access, ICAR 32 identifies specific categories of records that are confidential and exempt from public disclosure:

  • Juvenile records: Cases involving minors are sealed and inaccessible without a court order.
  • Adoption records: Adoption proceedings are confidential under Idaho law.
  • Mental health commitment records: Records from civil commitment proceedings are protected from public review.
  • Personally identifying information: Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and similar data are redacted from publicly accessible court documents even when the underlying case is public.
  • Sealed and expunged records: Any record sealed by court order or expunged under Idaho law is removed from public access.

Members of the public seeking access to restricted or archived records should contact the Clerk’s Office directly for guidance on what is available and what procedures apply. The Idaho Supreme Court’s records and camera request page also outlines the rules governing public and media access to court proceedings and documents statewide.
